Erskine prevails 3-1 over King for first place

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bristol, TN – In a showdown for 1st place, Erskine College prevailed over King College 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20) in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action at the Student Center Complex.  Erskine dropped their non-conference match against Carson-Newman 3-0 to snap their 5-match win streak.

In the first game, the Fleet (8-8, 6-2) bounced back after dropping the first set to win the next three sets.  Senior setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) earned her third consecutive “double-double” with 41 assists and 16 digs.  She also added 7 kills.  SeniorLauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) led the Fleet with 16 kills and 2 blocks while freshman Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School) played her best collegiate game with 14 kills on 27 attempts along with 6 service aces, 5 digs and 2 blocks from her middle hitter position.  SophomoreCaitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) earned her first career “double-double” with 11 kills and 11 digs.  Senior libero Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) had a game-high 22 digs with 5 assists.

The Tornado were led by Summer Kemmer’s game-high 18 kills and Lauren Willoughby added 11 kills.

In the Fleet’s second match, Erskine lost two very close sets 27-25 and 25-21 before dropping the final set 25-13 to Carson-Newman College, snapping the Fleet’s 5-match win streak.

Stewart again led the Fleet’s offensive efforts with a game-high 13 kills while Sullivan contributed 10 kills.  Thornton had a game-high 17 digs to lead the back row.

Meanwhile, the Eagles got 12 kills from Sabrina Papala and 10 kills from Ashley Ferris.

Erskine plays one more road game, on Tuesday against Coker College, before returning home for a three game home stand starting on Wednesday against Brevard College.
