Erskine pulls away from St. Andrews to win 95-85

Box Score Laurinburg, NC – Led by Corey Sorrell’s 24 points, Erskine had five players score in double-figures as the Fleet beat the Knights of Saint Andrews University 95 to 85 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Harris Court.  Erskine improves to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in conference while the St. Andrews falls to 6-14 overall and 1-7 in conference.

After surrendering a 3-point basket to start the game, Erskine scored the next four baskets, including three 3-point baskets by three different players, to take an 11 to 3 lead.  The Fleet led the rest of the half but could not pull away from the Knights.  Erskine took a one point lead at 47 to 46 into the locker room.

St. Andrews University immediately took the lead in the second half on a 3-point basket by Ryan Streater.  Streater finished with a game-high 31 points.

The lead exchanged hands four times over the first five minutes of the second half at which point Erskine’s Corey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Holy Cross High School) led the Fleet on a 7-0 run, nailing two jump shots while sophomore Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) converted an old-fashion three –point play, to give the Fleet the lead for good at 63 to 56. 

Later in the half, senior Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Prijepoljska Gimnazija) sparked a 12-0 Erskine run hitting three consecutive jump shots, the last one a three point basket, while Gabbard capped the run with a steal and dunk with  a little less than five minutes left.  The Knights made a small run at the end of the game to trim to the Fleet lead to ten points at 95 to 85 at the game’s conclusion.

Gabbard scored 20 points while dishing out 9 assists with zero turnovers.  Pejovic came off the bench to score 17 points, going a perfect 4 for 4 from 3-point range, and Brandon Quarles (Landrum, SC, Landrum High School) added 15 more points.  DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) also reached double-digits with 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Besides Streater’s 31 points, the Knights got 15 points from Antonio Moffitt while Chris Sumski and Demetrius Monroe finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.

Erskine shot an impressive 51.5% from the floor, including a sizzling 51.9% from behind the arc.

Erskine travels to Gaffney, South Carolina, to play Limestone College on Thursday.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
