#30 Fleet Defeat Wingate 5-1

Due West, SC – Erskine College ended its three game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Wingate Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at Grier Field in non conference baseball action.

In the bottom of the second inning, Will Huff (Sugar Hill, GA, North Gwinnett HS) led off with a single to left field and then advance to second on a ground out by Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS).   Shawn Glover (Columbia, SC, Richland Northeast High School) would then reach on an error by the Bulldogs allowing Huff to move up to third base.  He would then score on a ground out by Casey Winckowski (Oregon, OH, Owens CC) to give Erskine a 1-0 lead.  The Fleet would add to their lead in the third when John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) led off with a single and then scored on a line drive home run from Drew Willingham (Hodges, SC, Greenwood HS) to make it a 3-0 game.

In the top of the sixth, Dodson McPherson would lead off with a single and later score when Jacob Karr reached on an Erskine error to cut the Fleet lead to two. Erskine would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning.  Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) led off with a single and advance to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball.  Huff would then drive a fly ball to center field to score Smith and make it a 4-1 game.  Erskine would add an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double from Huff that scored Smith who had singled.

Huff led the Fleet offense going 2-3 with a double and two RBI’s , while Smith and Bolding also added two hits. Carlton Watts (Laurens, SC, Spartanburg Methodist) (3-0) picked up the win allowing just one unearned run on three hits and striking out three in 5.2 innings.

McPherson was the long Bulldog hitter with two hits, going 2-4 with a run scored.   Ben Currie (0-3) took the loss allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out three in 7.2 innings

With the win, Erskine improves to 13-3 on the year while Wingate falls to 14-7.
