Erskine splits pair with Pfeiffer

Due West, SC – Erskine bounced back after losing the first game 3 to 1 to win the second game 6 to 4 against Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex.  Erskine now stands at 9-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference while Pfeiffer is 12-12 overall and 7-1 in conference.

Pfeiffer’s pitcher Melanie Conklin held the Fleet to just one run on five hits as Pfeiffer won the first game 3 to 1.  Conklin limited the Fleet to just three hits through the first six frames, surrendering the one run on two hits in the seventh.  In the third inning, Conklin drove in Sam Taylor with an RBI single to plate Pfeiffer’s first run of the game.  Pfeiffer added two more runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Sarah Waylock and Kirsten Patterson.  In the seventh, Erskine’s Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) smashed a double off the center field wall to score Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School), who had also doubled.  Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School) took the loss for the Fleet, tossing seven innings while giving up three runs on eight hits.

The second game was marked by several defensive miscues resulting in six unearned runs by the two teams.  The Fleet scored two unearned in the first inning on consecutive errors by the Falcons and another one in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead.  An Erskine defensive miscue in the fourth and fifth innings resulted in Pfeiffer scoring two runs in each inning.  Erskine plated three earned runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Jocelyn Smith (Greer, SC, Riverside HS) and a two-run single Whitney Brown (West Columbia, SC, Airport High School).   Erskine won the game 6-4.  Erskine pitcher Heather Richey (Abbeville, SC, Abbeville High School) earned her fifth win by throwing a complete game.  Richey allowed four runs, only one earned, on five hits.  Allison Braswell took the loss giving up 6 runs, 3 earned, on 7 hits.

Erskine goes on the road to face local rival Lander University on Tuesday.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
