Anderson, SC – The Erskine women’s tennis team downed archrival Anderson University today 5-4 in non-conference women’s tennis action at Max Grubbs Courts. With the win, Erskine improves to 9-1 overall but, more importantly Erskine won a vital point toward reclaiming the Beville Cup. Anderson slips to 6-3 on the season.
Erskine won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage into the singles competition. At #1 doubles, Tessa Rheault (Levis, Quebec, Canada, Ecole Pointe Levy) and Britton Bignon (Athens, GA, Oconee County High School) defeated Camie Beaulieu-Brune and Shelby Anderson 8-3. Erskine also triumphed at #2 doubles as Victoria Stephens (Cumming, GA, South Forsyth High School) and Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) defeated Avery Owens and Lauren Trumbull. The Fleet almost had a clean sweep but Julie Halbert and Marcela Gallegos rallied to beat Abby O'Reilly (Acworth, GA, Harrison High School) and Nikki Miller (Simpsonville, SC, Southside Christian School)9-7.
The two teams split the six singles matches with Erskine winning the top three flights while Anderson took four through six. Tessa Rheault and Corin Hallman both won their matches in straight sets. Britton Bignon won her match in three sets after dropping her middle set 6-2. Abby O’Reilly rallied to force a third set at #4 singles but lost the third set 6-2. Victoria Stephens and April Horne (Columbia, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) lost their two matches in straight sets.
For the first time this year, Erskine leads in the Beville Cup competition with Anderson University 9 to 8.5
The Fleet face their second regionally ranked in as many days tomorrow when Queens University visits Due West. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
