Boiling Springs, NC – Gardner-Webb University defeated Erskine 6-1 in non-conference women’s tennis action at the Webb Tennis Complex, giving the Fleet their first loss of the 2011 season.  The Fleet now stand at 3-1 overall.

GWU swept the doubles competition defeating the Fleet 8-0, 8-3, and 8-2.  In NCAA division I play, the three doubles matches only count for one point.

In the singles competition, GWU won five of the six matches.  Senior Britton Bignon (Athens, GA, Oconee County High School) went three sets to defeat Laura Kriett 6-4, 1-6, and 12-10.  Freshman Corin Hallman (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) fell short in her upset bid of Ioana Oprea losing 6-4, 7-5.

Erskine returns to conference play this weekend as they host Coker College on Saturday.  The match time has been moved from 1 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.
