Richey tosses no-hitter as Fleet sweep NGU

Due West, SC – Sophomore pitcher Heather Richey threw a no-hitter in the nightcap as Erskine swept North Greenville University in non-conference softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex.  Erskine climbs to 3-1 on the young season while North Greenville University remains winless at 0-4.

Trailing 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, Erskine rallied for four runs to win the first game 6-5.  The Crusaders scored first with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning.   The Fleet tied the game in their bottom half of the frame on a two-run double by sophomore Morgan Purcell (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School).  North Greenville seemed put the game out of reach by scoring three times in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Emily Campbell and a solo shot by Roof.  In the sixth inning, Erskine scored four runs to take a 6-5 lead, highlighted by Purcell’s first home run of the season, a solo shot to start the inning.  Junior Leigh Anne Shelley (Fork, SC, Lake View), in relief of Kelsey Spurrier, shutdown the Crusaders in order, including striking out the last two batters to earn her first save of the season.  Spurrier (Charlotte, NC, Butler High School) pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 runs, 3 earned, on 6 hits while walking two and striking out eight, for her second victory of the season.  Taylor Roof took the loss for the Crusaders pitching two-thirds of inning.

Erskine sophomore Heather Richey (Abbeville, SC, Abbeville High School) tossed a no-hitter in the second game, mixing her pitches effectively to keep the Crusader hitters off-balance.  Richey went 7 innings with just one walk while striking out four.  Offensively, senior Lindsey LaPrad (Summerville, SC, Fort Dorchester HS) drove in three with a double in the third.  Larissa Shannon (Newberry, SC, Newberry High School)added two more runs for the Fleet in the fifth with her first home run of the season.

Erskine hosts South Atlantic Conference powerhouse Carson-Newman College this Friday.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
