Due West, SC – The 17th ranked Flying Fleet defeated Anderson University 6-0 Tuesday afternoon at Grier Field in non conference baseball action.
The Trojans looked like they would take an early lead in the top of the first when Erskine starter Tayler Ramsey (Richburg, SC, USC-Sumter) walked the first two batters of the game, but he would get Blake May to ground into a double play and strike out Ryan Saxon to end the rally. In the bottom of the second inning, Brian Laznik (Chardon, OH) would hit a one out triple and then score on a single by Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) to give Erskine a 1-0 lead. Casey Winckowski (Oregon, OH) would blast his third home run in as many games in the third to push the lead to 2-0.
Anderson would look to mount a rally in the top of the fourth after Thomas Padro ledoff with a double. After a walk to Saxon to pust runners at the corners, Ramsey would get another ground ball double play to end the inning. The Fleet would add a run in the fifth and in the sixth to push their lead to four. Drew Willingham (Hodges, SC, Greenwood HS) would give Erskine some breathing room with a two run double in the seventh to make is a 6-0 game. The Fleet bull pen would hold the lead for Ramsey allowing just two hits over the final three innings to seal the win.
Willingham led the Fleet at the plate going 3-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Smith was 2-3 with a double and two runs driven in. Ramsey (2-0) picked up the win allowing just three hits and striking out five in six innings of work.
Jonathan Romano and Padro were both 1-3 with a double to lead the Trojans at the plate. Ben Roberts (0-2) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out three in five innings of work.
With the win, Erskine improves to 5-0 on the year, while Anderson falls to 5-5 with the loss.
