Due West, SC – The 18th ranked Flying Fleet blasted five home runs in a 12-1 victory over Brevard College Thursday afternoon at Grier Field in non conference baseball action.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) hit a solo shot to left field to spark the Fleet offense. Shawn Glover (Columbia, SC, Richland Northeast High School) would hit a two run double later in the inning and score on a single by Chase Corn (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge HS) to put Erskine up 4-0. Erskine would add three more runs in the third inning on a solo home run by John John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) and a two run shot by Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) and would not look back. Drew Willingham (Hodges, SC, Greenwood HS) and Casey Winckowski (Oregon, OH, Owens CC) also added home runs for the Fleet in the victory.
McCarthy was 1-2 with a home run and two runs batted in, while Corn finished 1-3 withtwo RBIs. Alex Sasser (Columbus, NC, East Columbus HS) also added two hits off the bench for the Fleet. Carlton Watts (Laurens, SC,Spartanburg Methodist) picked up his first win of the season allowing just two hits in five innings and striking out five batters.
With the win, Erskine improves to 4-0 on the season while Brevard falls to 0-3. The Fleet return to action Tuesday afternoon as they host local rival Anderson University at 2:30.
