Due West, SC – Erskine’s
Liz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) served a career-high 10 aces to direct Erskine to a straight set victory (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) over visiting conference foe Belmont-Abbey College tonight at Belk Arena in women’s volleyball action. The win snaps a four game losing skid for the Fleet, who improve to 16-11 overall and 11-2 in conference. Belmont-Abbey dips to 15-13 overall and 7-7 in conference with the loss.
Erskine took a two-point lead early in the opening set and held it until Stefanie Holler and Remick Tiller teamed up for a block to give Belmont-Abbey their first lead at 17-16. The Fleet quickly responded with an 8-3 run, highlighted by four of Massey’s ten aces. Erskine won the first set 25-19.
Massey continued her excellent serving, leading the Fleet on a 10-0 run to start the second set on three consecutive service aces. Junior
Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) also knocked down three of her six kills during the run. Belmont-Abbey slowly cut into the Fleet lead and got as close as five points on a kill by Lydia Shellenberg at 18-13. Erskine closed out the set on a kill by senior
Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, East Central CC) to win 25-18.
After trading points to open the third set, Erskine jumped out to a 6-2 advantage on a hard kill by freshman
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School). Bullock finished the night with 7 kills on 12 attempts for a game-high .583 hitting percentage. Erskine continued to stretch their lead, finally winning the set by nine at 25-16.
Senior
Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, USC-Upstate) had a game-high 10 kills and 4 blocks to lead the Fleet.
For the Crusaders, Angela Jubb had a team-high 9 kills.
Erskine wore pink jerseys in their annual Dig Pink game. The team asked fans for a $5 admission donation and sold special Dig Pink game t-shirts. All the money raised will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation in the fight against breast cancer.
Erskine travels to Queens University on Friday and returns home on Saturday to play Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m.
