Erskine Volleyball has tough weekend at Lander Tournament

Greenwood, SC – Erskine had a tough weekend in the Lander University Crossover Tournament losing all four matches.

In the Fleet’s opening game against the University of Montevallo, Erskine lost in straight sets 20-25, 13-25, and 15-25.  Senior Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, East Central CC) led Erskine with a game- high 13 kills on 28 attempts.  The Fleet struggled at the net recording only 1 block compared to Montevallo’s 7 blocks.  Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) had a team-high 13 digs in the match.

Erskine faced their toughest opponent this season in their next match undefeated and #16 ranked Armstrong Atlantic University.  The Flying Fleet lost in three sets 15-25, 19-25, and 20-25.  Junior Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) recorded a season-best and game-high 12 kills with just 1 error on 23 attempts.  Murray also shared game-high honors with 12 kills.  Defensively Dodge had an impressive 23 digs, a game-high.

On Saturday Erskine lost their first game 3-1 (23-25, 17-25, 25-23, and 22-25) to USC-Aiken.  The Fleet committed a season-worst 13 service errors in the loss.  Murray again led the Fleet with 12 kills.  Senior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, USC-Upstate) had 10 kills with 5 blocks.

In their final game against host Lander University, Erskine battled back after losing the first two matches to tie the game at 2-2.  The Fleet lost the gut-wrenching fifth set 12-15.  Campbell led the Fleet knocking down 16 kills along with an impressive 10 blocks, her first “double-double.”  Junior setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) also recorded a “double-double,” her seventh of the season, with 37 assists and 14 digs.  She also had 4 kills along with 4 blocks.  In addition to Chabra, four other Fleet players recorded double-digit digs.  Dodge and Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) had 14 digs while Anna Butrym (West Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) and Liz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) had 13 and 12 digs respectively.

After the weekend, Erskine now stands at 15-11 overall and 10-2 in conference.

Erskine hosts Belmont-Abbey College this Tuesday in the Fleet’s annual DIG PINK Game.  Erskine is asking a for $5 admission donation and will be selling special DIG PINK.  All proceeds raised will go to the Side-Out Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports breast cancer research and education.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
