Florence, SC – The Mount Olive Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a come from behind 2-1 victory over Erskine College in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Friday afternoon.
The Fleet would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School) singled to lead off the game. He would then steal second base and score on a two out single by
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS). That would be all the scoring for either team for the next eight innings, although both teams had chances through out the game to score.
In the bottom of the ninth with Erskine leading 1-0, Erskine closer
Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) would retire the lead off hitter but then give up back to back singles to put the tying run at second base. The Trojans would take advantage of an Erskine error to tie the game up with runners at second and third with one out. After a ground out moved the winning run to third, Mount Olive would single up the middle and win the game 2-1.
Bolding led the Fleet going 3-4 with a double and RBI, while Huff was 1-3 with a run scored and
Matt Youngblood (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge CC) also added a single in the loss. Pearson was the tough luck looser allowing two unearned runs in two innings of relief work.
The Fleet will play Columbus State tomorrow at 11:00 am in an elimination game.
