Erskine Sweeps Lees-McRae

Banner Elk, NC – Courtney Davis hit her 19th home run of the season and drove in six runs to lead Erskine to two wins over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolina softball action. 

 

The Fleet quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double-steal.  Senior Courtney Davis took off from first forcing a throw from the catcher.  Fellow senior Kayla Vinson beat the throw home to give Erskine the early lead.  The Lady Bobcats tied the score in the bottom of the 2nd on an Erskine error.  Lees-McRae scored another unearned run in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.  In the top of the sixth, Davis launched a two run blast over the left field fence for her 19th home run of the season, giving the Fleet the 3-2 victory.  Fleet pitcher Heather Richey earned her sixth win with a complete game four-hitter.  She struck out seven in the contest.

 

The second game quickly turned into a slugfest.  The two teams scored ten runs in the first three innings with the Fleet leading 7 to 3.  The Fleet added four more runs in the fourth only to see the Lady Bobcats close within two in the bottom of the fifth at 11 to 9.  The Fleet added two more runs in the top of the seventh and won the game 13 to 9.

 

The two teams combined for 31 hits in the game.  Freshman Melanie Henderson went a perfect 4 for 4 while senior Kelly Davis and freshman Larissa Shannon both had three hits.  Courtney Davis and Larissa Shannon both drove in four runs a piece.  Krissy Kendrick picked up her second win for the Fleet while Kelsey Spurrier notched her second save of the season.

 

With the two victories, the Fleet improve to 11-5 in Conference Carolinas and 19-20-1 overall.  The Fleet host Barton College for two games this Saturday with the first game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
