Fleet lose to Armstrong Atlantic in extra innings

Savannah, GA – The Erskine baseball team dropped a crucial game last night to Armstrong Atlantic losing 5 to 4 in 13 innings at Pirate Field in non-conference baseball action.

 

The Fleet opened the game scoring a run in each of the first three innings.  In the first inning, senior Chas Anthony hit a double down the left field line and scored on John Bolding’s single to give the Fleet a 1-0 lead.  Zach McCarthy led off the second inning with his eighth home run of the season giving Erskine a 2-0 advantage.  Unfortunately, Armstrong Atlantic came back to score three runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Carlos Cardza-Oqundo.  The Fleet tied the game at three a piece in the top of the third on an RBI double by Drew Willingham.  Carlos Cardza-Oqundo gave the lead back to Armstrong Atlantic with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.  The Fleet would send the game into extra innings in the top of the ninth when Zach McCarthy led off the inning with a double to right field followed by an RBI single by Matt Youngblood.  Armstrong Atlantic won the game in the bottom of the thirteenth on a RBI single by pinch hitter Drew Walker.

 

Offensively, the Fleet were led by Chas Anthony with four hits while Zach McCarthy had three hits.  Matt Youngblood also had two hits.  On the mound, Atlee Pearson took the loss pitching 6 innings in relief while yielding one run on six hits.  He struck out six and walked two.

 

For Armstrong Atlantic, Carlos Cardza-Oqundo went 2 for 4 and knocked in three runs.  Michael Price had a team-high three hits while Alex Wyche and Cameron Scott also had two hits a piece.  Jonathan Fulghum earned his fifth win of the season by pitching two scoreless innings in relief.  Armstrong Atlantic starter, Ryan Smith, worked six innings surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one.

 

The Fleet travel to Milledgeville, Georgia, today to play Georgia College.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
