Wilson, NC – The 23rd ranked Flying Fleet blasted five home runs to sweep a Conference Carolinas double header from Barton College Friday afternoon at Fleming Stadium.
Game One
In the third inning when
Matt Youngblood (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge CC) led off with a double and then later scored on a Barton error then the Fleet would get RBI singles by
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School) and
Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) to put Erskine up 3-0. The Bulldogs would score a run in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-1 game. In the fourth inning, Brandon Garrett would lace a RBI double and the Fogle would drive in two runs with a single later in the inning to make it a 6-1 game. With the two RBI’s, Bryan breaks the NCAA Division II career RBI record with his 281st RBI. The Fleet would add three more runs in the eighth on a three run home run by
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) and hold off a late Barton rally to take 9-7 victory.
Youngblood and
Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) both had three hits to lead Erskine, while Fogle drove in three runs.
William Buzhardt (Columbia, SC, Ben Lippen High School) (10-1) picked up the win allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits in 7.2 innings of work.
Game Two
Erskine would once again take the lead first when Huff scored on a RBI single from Fogle in the top of the first. Barton would score a run in the bottom half of the inning and add another in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Fleet would take a one run lead in the fourth on a two run home run by
Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) and then add another run when Youngblood doubled and scored on a single by Garrett. The Bulldog offense would explode in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to go ahead 6-4. Fogle would blast his 18th home run of the season to center field in the fifth to cut the lead to one. The score would remain 6-5 until the top of the seventh when
Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) led the inning off with a home run to tie the game. Bolding would then blast his second home run of the day to left center field to put the Fleet up 7-6.
Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) would come into the game in the bottom half of the inning and retire the Bulldogs in order to pick up his 12 save of the season.
Fogle led the Fleet offense going 2-3 with a home run and two RBI’s while Danielewicz also drove in two runs.
Russell Reid (Hudson, NC, South Caldwell HS) (7-4) picked up the win allowing no runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of relief work.
