WILSON, N.C.—Erskine College, the NCAA Division II national leader in home runs, added two more to its total on Thursday, but it was four seventh-inning singles that sealed a 5-4 win for the second-seeded Flying Fleet over No. 5 seed Barton College in the 2010 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament.
Trailing by a run,
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School) singled with one out, moved to second on a
Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) single, and scored the game-tying run on a single by
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS). Fogle and Bolding each moved up a base on an errant relay throw during the attempt to throw out Huff at the plate, and Fogle scored the go-ahead run when
Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) followed with a slow-rolling infield single to third.
From there, Erskine closer
Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS), second in the nation in saves, cruised through the final two innings to record his 13th save of the year, preserving the win for
William Buzhardt (Columbia, SC, Ben Lippen High School) (11-1).
With the victory, the Flying Fleet move into a 7 p.m. Friday winner’s bracket matchup with No. 4 seed Pfeiffer. Barton drops into an 11 a.m. elimination game against the loser of Thursday’s Mount Olive-Anderson game.
Erskine (37-12) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Fogle’s nation-leading 26th home run. The score remained that way until the Barton fourth, when the Bulldogs (21-25) struck for three runs on four hits off Erskine starter Mo Seay – doubles by Ryan McCleney and Wes Francis, and singles by Aaron Watkins and Kevin Carty.
The Fleet tied the game in the sixth on Bolding’s 14th homer of the year – and fifth against Barton in four meetings this year – but Barton came right back to take the lead again with a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by McCleney that scored Ryan Daughtry, who had singled to lead off the inning.
Barton starter Kramer Sneed (6-3) posted his fifth complete game of the year, scattering 10 hits, walking two and striking out 12.
Kevin Carty had two RBI to pace the Bulldogs offensively. Fogle had three hits for Erskine, with Bolding and Chas Anthony contributing two hits each.
With his home run, Fogle ties the NCAA career record with his 71st, while Buzhardt ties both the Erskine College single season and career record for wins.
