Due West, SC – The 20th ranked Flying Fleet split a double header with conference rival Mount Olive Saturday afternoon, losing game one 14-5 and rebounding to win game two 12-6.
Game One
Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) would give Erskine the lead in the bottom of the first with his second home run in as many days to drive in
Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) who had walked earlier in the inning. The lead would be short lived as the Trojans would explode for seven runs in the top of the second and they would not look back. Mount Olive would score a run in the third and two in the fourth to push their lead to 10-2, but in the bottom of the fifth
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School) would blast a home run to left center field to make it a 10-5 game. That would be as close as the Fleet would get as the Trojans added four insurance runs late in the game.
Fogle was the lone Erskine player with two hits along with driving in two runs, while Huff was 1-3 with a home run and three RBI’s.
Russell Reid (Hudson, NC, South Caldwell HS) (7-5) took the loss allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Game Two
Mount Olive would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Fleet would respond in the bottom half of the inning. Anthony would line a one out double down the right field line and then advance to third on an error by the right fielder. Fogle would then ground out to score Anthony and tie the game. With that double in the first inning Chas Anthony broke the NCAA Division II career doubles record with his 82nd moving him ahead of former Erskine stand out Shelton Cisson.
Mount Olive would once again score a single run in the top of the third, but Erskine would again respond in the bottom half.
Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) would lead the inning off with a triple down the right field line and then score on a double by Huff to tie the game once again. In the top of the fourth, the Trojans would take advantage of two Erskine errors to go up 6-2 and it looked as though the Trojans might complete the sweep.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) and Garrett would lead the inning off with back to back singles, followed by a walk to Huff to load the bases. Anthony would single to make it a 6-3 game and then Fogle would reach on an error by the second baseman that allowed two runs to score and make it a one run game.
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) would then ground out to score Anthony and tie the game up.
Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) (2-2) came into the game in the top of the sixth and was able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Trojans from taking the lead. McCarthy would then lead off the bottom half of the inning with a solo blast over the right field wall and give Erskine a 7-6 lead. With two on and one out Fogle would run his consecutive games with a home run streak to seven with a blast into the trees in left field and put the Fleet up 10-6. Erskine would add two more runs in the inning and Pearson would shut the Trojans down in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.
Anthony finished the game 2-2 with a double and RBI, while Huff, Luke Danielewicz, McCarthy, and Garret all had two hits in the victory.
