Softball Games Decided In Last Inning

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 5 to 4 against the visiting Cougars of Columbus State University (9-12-1).  Unfortunately, the Fleet (9-14-1) blew a four run lead in the top of the seventh of the second game that ended in a 6 to 6 tie due to darkness.

Columbus State jumped out quickly to a three run lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run by junior Kristi Bullard.  It was her fifth home run of the season.  The Flying Fleet got two runs back in the bottom of the second when senior first baseman Courtney Davis hit her ninth home run of the season.  The Fleet tied the game in the bottom of the sixth only to see the Cougars take back the lead in the top of the seventh on Morgan Staffins’ sacrifice fly to center field.  In the bottom of the seventh, senior Kelly Davis go the Fleet started with a lead off single, her second hit of the game.  After getting two outs, Columbus State elected to intentionally walk Courtney Davis to load the bases to face junior Kerry Fincher.  Kerry Fincher made the Cougars pay by hitting a sharp ground ball up the middle driving in both the tying and winning runs for the Fleet.  Kerry Fincher went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.  Heather Richey got her second win of the season pitching in relief of starter Lauren Gunter.  Jennifer Isasi got the loss for the Cougars.

The Fleet got three home runs and took a 6 to 2 lead into the last inning of the second game before watching it slip away. Columbus State third baseman Carrie Jones hit a three-run home run and, with two outs, Kori Waugh singled to center field to score Kristi Bullard.  The Fleet failed to score in the bottom of the seventh and the officials called the game due to darkness.  Erskine pitcher Kelsey Spurrier got the no-decision by pitching seven innings, giving up eight hits, 6 runs (3 earned), while striking out eight.  She also hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth.  Larissa Shannon and Courtney Davis hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Flying Fleet.

The Fleet host Georgia Southwestern University tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. while Columbus State travels to Francis Marion University tomorrow.
