ANDERSON, S.C. -- The visiting Flying Fleet used the long ball to claim a doubleheader sweep from the Anderson baseball team as the Trojans fell by scores of 5-4 and 14-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Erskine senior
Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) recorded a two-out three-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the seventh inning to provide the winning run as the Flying Fleet rallied for the win in game one.
Anderson freshman hurler TJ Estes, bidding for a complete game in his first collegiate start, fell just shy by going 6 2/3 innings and absorbed the loss.
Anthony gave Erskine (30-9) the early lead by doubling off the right field wall with one out in the first inning and scored on
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) two-out single through the right side.
Anderson (13-26) rallied to take the lead in the third inning when Blake May took a 2-0 pitch high over the fence in left field that also scored freshman Chance Thomas, who had singled with two outs.
Trojan freshman Erick Sanderson led off the fourth inning with his second consecutive hit, a single through the left side, and crossed the plate one out later when sophomore Thomas Padro lifted a high pop into shallow right field that hit the ground when the Flying Fleet left fielder and second baseman collided. AU catcher Brett Scarberry was thrown out attempting to score on the same play, ending the inning with Anderson leading, 3-1.
Anthony, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in the opener, led off the sixth frame with a double down the left field line and pulled Erskine within 3-2 when senior
Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) followed with another double, and set up his own heroics in the seventh.
EC sophomore
Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) led off the seventh with a single through the right side and moved into scoring position on
Matt Youngblood (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge CC) sacrifice bunt. Junior
Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) drew a walk and one out later, Anthony recorded what turned out to be the game-winning hit.
The Trojans climbed back within one in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Thomas reached on an error with one out, moved to second on May’s single to right, and following a wild pitch, crossed the plate when Ryan Saxon bounced out to shortstop. But it wouldn’t be enough, as the Fleet avenged a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Trojans back in mid-February at Memorial Stadium, when the Trojans’ explosive offense erupted to lift AU to a conference doubleheader sweep, 20-11 and 8-1.
Anderson had its two –game win streak snapped, while Erskine has claimed five of its last six contests.
Erskine scored five runs in the second inning of the nightcap, all with two outs, as Anthony hit a line drive to center field and Derek Hipp slipped just as he got to the ball and it rolled all the way to the fence while Anthony rounded the bases. Bryan Fogle followed with a homer to left center to give the visitors a 5-0 cushion.
Anderson answered with a solo run in the bottom of the inning when Saxon ripped his team-leading seventh home run over the fence in left-center.
The Flying Fleet added another run in the fourth and AU countered with two in the fifth to make it a 6-3 contest, but Erskine broke the game open with five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
