Due West, SC – The 23rd ranked Flying Fleet hit four home runs and erased a 3-0 deficit to take a 14-4 victory over visiting Armstrong Atlantic Tuesday afternoon in non conference baseball action.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a two out solo home run from Alex Wyche. Armstrong Atlantic would make it a 3-0 game in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Chris Zittrouer and a RBI single from Drew Carnes. The Fleet offense would explode in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) would lead off the inning with a single and then score on a home run by
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School).
Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) and
Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) would then follow with back to back singles and then score when
John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) blasted a home run into the left centerfield trees to put Erskine up 5-3. With his single in the third, Fogle joins Anthony and Shelton Cisson as the only Erskine players with 300 career hits.
The Pirates would take advantage of an Erskine error in the fourth to make it a one run game, but that would be as close as they would get as Erskine would pull away with nine runs in the last four innings to take the victory.
Anthony led the Fleet at the plate going 3-5 with two RBI’s while Bolding was 2-5 with a home run and five runs batted in and Huff was 2-5 with a home run and four RBI’s.
William Buzhardt (Columbia, SC, Ben Lippen High School) (9-1) picked up the win allowing just two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
John Roberts led the Pirates on offense going 3-5 with a run driven in, while Wyche and Jake Sutton both added two hits in the loss. Ryan Smith (1-2) took the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
With the win Erskine improves to 28-9 on the season, while Armstrong Atlantic falls to 19-12.
