Due West, SC – Erskine College defeated Pfeiffer University 5-4 in game one of a Conference Carolinas double header, but the Falcons rebounded to win game two 6-4 Saturday afternoon.

Game One

In the bottom of the first, the Fleet would get RBI singles from John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS) and Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) and then Matt Youngblood (Travelers Rest, SC, Blue Ridge CC) would reach on an error to give Erskine a 3-0 lead. Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) would then put the Fleet up 5-0 with a solo home run in the third and a RBI double in the fifth.

In the top of the eighth, Will Davis would hit a run scoring single and Josh Strickland would reach on a fielder’s choice to score another run and make it a 5-2 game. Eric Shoemaker would later line a two run double into the gap to cut the Fleet lead to one. Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) would then retire the next three hitters to get out of the jam and help the Fleet hold on for the victory.

Fogle led Erskine at the plate going 3-4 with a double, home run, and two runs driven in while Chas Anthony was 2-4 with a run scored. Derek Smith (4-0) picked up the win allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of relief work and Pearson picked up his 10th save of the year allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings of work.

Erskine would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on a run scoring single by Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) and then they would take the lead the very next inning on a solo home run by Fogle.

The Falcons would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth on a two run single by Hunter Boehme. Pfeiffer would add two more runs in the sixth with a two run home run by Preston Lyon to make it a 6-3 game. Zach McCarthy (Spartanburg, SC, Byrnes HS) would hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4 but it wouldn’t be enough as the Falcons held on for the victory.
