Greenwood, SC – Lander University took two games from the Fleet today at Doug Spears Field in non-conference softball action, winning the first game 3 to 1 and the second game 6 to 1. With the losses, Fleet drop to 11-16-1 while the Lander Bearcats improve to 13-15 on the season.
In the first game, Lander’s pitching duo of Shelby Spencer and Hayley Leissner combined for twelve strikeouts and limited the Fleet to just three hits. Leissner earned the win in relief pitching the final four innings, striking out seven, walking one without yielding an earned run. Spencer pitched the first three innings, striking out five and only walking one. Rebekah George took the loss for the Fleet, pitching three innings, allowing two unearned runs, striking out three and walking only one batter.
Lander scored two runs in the bottom of the first on an Erskine throwing error. The Bearcats increased their lead to three when Blair Hammonds singled home Casey Corbitt.
The Fleet got a run in the sixth when Melanie Henderson scored on a Bearcat fielding error. Unfortunately the Fleet could not muster anymore offense falling 3 to 1.
In the second game, the Fleet got the board first when Jocelyn Smith singled home Courtney Davis. Unfortunately, the Fleet gave it right back in the bottom half of the second on a fielding error that allowed Hammonds to score. The Fleet surrendered another unearned error the next inning and the Bearcats blew it open in the fifth on Daisy Stewart’s two-run homer. Leissner picked up her second win of the night for the Bearcats while freshman Krissy Kendrick took the loss for the Fleet. Kendrick threw six innings, gave up six runs, four earned while whiffing one and granting one base on balls.
The Fleet go on the road next week for two doubleheaders. On Tuesday, the Fleet travel to Laurinburg, North Carolina to play St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The next day the Fleet slip over to Misenheimer, North Carolina to play fellow Conference Carolinas member Pfeiffer University.
