Softball Takes Pair From Belmont-Abbey

Richey Throws No-Hitter

Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet took two from Belmont-Abbey College on the road today.  The Fleet won the first game 9 to 0 and won the nightcap 7 to 4.  With the two victories, the Fleet improve to 11-14-1 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas while Belmont-Abbey falls to 10-12 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas. 

 

In the first game, freshman Heather Richey threw no-hitter while senior Courtney Davis and freshman Larissa Shannon each hit home runs.  Erskine got on the broad first scoring two unearned runs in the first inning.  In the third inning, Erskine widened its lead on a two-run home run by Larissa Shannon and an RBI single by Jocelyn Smith.  The Fleet added four more runs in the top of the fifth when Courtney Davis hit her 13th home run of the season, a three-run blast.  Kelly Davis singled home the final run.

 

Heather Richey earned her third win by throwing a no-hitter, striking out three in five innings. Kim Anders took the loss for Belmont-Abbey, yielding five runs, three earned, on seven hits in three innings of work.

 

In game two, the Belmont-Abbey drew first blood with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.  Erskine responded with five runs in the top of the second as Courtney Davis went deep again, this time a two-run homer.  Kayla Vinson and Kelly Davis contributed RBI singles.  Belmont Abbey got one back in the third on an RBI double by Sherrill.

 

The Fleet extended th lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Crusaders made it interesting in the bottom the sixth.  Belmont-Abbey scored two runs and had bases loaded but Heather Richey, pitching in relief of Kelsey Spurrier, got the last out of the inning and retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for her first save of the year.

 

Kelsey Spurrier earned her sixth win after holding Belmont-Abbey to four runs, one earned, on four hits in five and two-thirds innings. She fanned five and walked three.  Emily Self was charged with the loss. She gave up seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits in seven innings. She struck out three and walked one.

 

The Fleet are back in action tomorrow as they host the Cobras of Coker College for two games.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
