Augusta State Takes Two From Fleet

Augusta, GA – The Erskine softball team dropped two games to non-conference opponent Augusta State University yesterday 1 to 0 and 9 to 0.  With the two losses, Erskine falls to 4-9 on the season while Augusta State improves to 9-3.

The first game was a classic pitchers duel with both teams managing a total of just three hits.  Erskine pitcher Kelsey Spurrier held the Lady Jags to just one hit through the first five innings.  In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Jags managed to get one run across the plate on a walk and a double by Laura Brown.  Lady Jags pitcher Sara DeMuth struck out the side in the top of the seventh to finish off the Fleet and earn her third victory of the season.  Erskine’s lone hit was a single by senior Kelly Davis in the 3rd inning.  Kelsey Spurrier picked up her third loss of the year despite a 0.87 earned run average.

The Fleet bats were silenced again in the 2nd game.  Lady Jags pitcher Emily Corish allowed just two hits, one by freshman Bailey Thornton in the 3rd and another single by freshman Melanie Henderson in the 4th inning, while striking out five.  The Fleet, on the other hand, did not help their cause, committing six fielding errors that led to five unearned runs.  Freshman pitcher Krissy Kendrick took the loss, her third, for the Fleet.

The Fleet travel to Salisbury, North Carolina, this weekend to play in the Catawba Invitational Tournament.  On Friday, Erskine will play Lenior-Rhyne College in the first game at 2:00 p.m. followed by Glenville College at 6:00 p.m.  Please check the Erskine College Athletic Web page for a complete game listing of the Catawba Invitational Tournament.
