Laurinburg, NC – The Flying Fleet kept their postseason hopes alive by defeating St. Andrews Presbyterian College 66 to 49 at Harris Court. The Fleet defense held the Knights to 36% from the field while limiting their 3-point shooting to just 7 of 19. For the Knights, it is the second time Erskine has held them to 49 points, both season-lows. The Fleet (11-14 overall, 8-10 conference), meanwhile, were red-hot shooting 59% from the floor, including an impressive 50% (7 of 14) behind the arc.
St. Andrews (7-19 overall, 3-16) scored first on Kurt Fenderbosch’s opening 3-point basket but Victor Street nailed a 3-point shot at the 16:19 mark giving Erskine the lead at 8 to 7. The Fleet gradually built their lead to eleven points by halftime at 30 to 19. The Knights hit just 9 of 29 attempts (31%) in the first half.
The Fleet continued their hot shooting into the second half, hitting 13 of 22 (59%) and stretching their lead out to nineteen points. The game ended with Fleet prevailing 66 to 49.
The Fleet had three players reach double-figures in scoring with Brandon Wright leading the way with 12 points followed by freshman Chris Gore’s 11 points and Brandon Quarles’ 10 points. Chris Gore also grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds, just missing his first collegiate “double-double.” The Knights also had three players reach double-digits with Marvin Jackson at 12 points, Kurt Fenderbosch with 11 points, and Antonio Moffitt with 10 points. Marcus Conner led the Knights on the boards with 6 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots on the night.
Entering tonight’s game, their first game since last Monday, the Flying Fleet held a one game lead over Belmont Abbey for the last postseason spot.
The Fleet travel to Gaffney, South Carolina, on Wednesday to play Limestone College. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
