Volleyball team splits weekend series

Due West, SC – The Erskine volleyball team split their weekend series, losing to Pfeiffer 3 to 2 on Friday then rebounding on Saturday to beat Queens 3 to 1.  The Fleet now stand at 16-10 overall and 12-4 in conference.

The Fleet suffered a heartbreaking 3 to 2 defeat to Pfeiffer (23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, and 19-17).  The Fleet won the first two sets before dropping the last three sets, including a thrilling 19-17 finale that featured several spectacular digs and kills by both teams.  The Fleet had four players finish with double-digit kills with sophomoreLiz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) and freshman Mary Crawford James (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Bishop England High School) each recording “double-doubles.”  Massey had a team-high 14 kills and 12 digs while James had 11 kills and 11 digs.  Junior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, USC-Upstate) blasted 13 kills and sophomore Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School)contributed 11 kills.  Sophomore libero Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) and freshman Anna Butrym (West Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) did a fine job defending on the back row with 12 digs each.  Setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School)finished with 54 assists, 6 kills, and 7 digs.

The Fleet rebounded the next day beating Queens 3 to 1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, and 25-18).  Liz Massey turned in another superb performance with her third “double-double” in the last four games with 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs.  Lauren Stewart led the Fleet with 12 kills while Sandra Campbell knocked down 10 kills as well.

The Fleet currently stand in 2nd place in Conference Carolinas with two games remaining to play in the regular season.  The Fleet travel to Gaffney, South Carolina, on Tuesday to play Limestone College and host Coker College on Friday for the season finale.
