Belmont-Abbey downs the Fleet 3-0

Belmont, NC – The Flying Fleet had their 6-game win streak snapped by Belmont-Abbey at the Wheeler Center losing 3-0.  The Crusaders edged the Fleet in all three sets winning 25-22, 25-23, and 25-23.  With the loss, the Fleet slip to 14-6 overall and 10-2 conference while Belmont-Abbey moves to 16-6 overall and 9-3 conference.

Neither team played well offensively with the Fleet hitting only .057 while the Crusaders hit a .169.  The Fleet did get a great game from junior Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, Hermann HS) who had a game-high 15 kills along with 8 digs.  Unfortunately, the other Fleet hitters combined for only 20 kills.  Leading the Fleet defensively was libero Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) with a game-high 20 digs.  Teammate Liz Massey (Greenville, SC, Eastside High School) also had 10 digs along with 9 kills.  Setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) finished with 26 assists.

The Crusaders were led by #4 Angela Jubb with 10 kills.  Defensively #11 Jennifer Angelich had a big night with 6 blocks helping the Crusaders control the net.   #13 Kay Shellenberg posted a “double-double” with 28 assists and 10 digs.

The two teams split the season series and it was Belmont-Abbey’s five consecutive win.

The Fleet stays on the road travelling to Banner Elk, North Carolina tomorrow to play two games.  The Fleet will play host Lees-McRae College at 11 a.m. in the first game, followed by Tusculum College at 1 p.m.
