Wilson, NC—The fourth seeded Flying Fleet rode an outstanding pitching performance from senior Mike Moore (Lexington, SC, Gilbert High School) to take a 5-1 victory over #1 seeded Belmont Abbey College Friday afternoon at Fleming Stadium.
Erskine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) led off with a single and scored when Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) reached on a fielder’s choice. In the top of the sixth, Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) would lead off with a home run to left center field to make it a 2-0 game. Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) would then double to center field and then score on a double from Cody McElhaney (Beech Island, SC, Midland Valley HS). McElhaney would then score on a single to right field by Garrett to push the Fleet lead to 4-0. Erskine would add another run in the seventh on a RBI ground out by Fogle that scored Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School). The Crusaders would make it a 5-1 game in the bottom half of the seventh on a solo home run by Daniel Kassouf, but that would be the only run the Crusaders would get as Moore retired nine of the next 11 batters he faced to close the game out.
McElhaney led the Fleet going 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Garrett was 2-4 with two runs batted in and Fogle finished 2-5 with a home run and two RBIs. With his two RBIs in the game, Fogle becomes the first player in Erskine College history with 200 career RBIs.
Mike Moore picked up his seventh victory with his most dominating performance of the season. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out 12 batters in nine innings.
With the victory, Erskine advances to play Anderson University at 1:00 pm tomorrow.
