Due West, SC---The Erskine College softball team swept a Conference Carolinas double header from Lees McRae Saturday afternoon, winning game one 2-1 and game two 9-1.
Game one was a pitchers duel from the start as neither Erskine’s Lauren Gunter (Batesburg, SC, Batesburg-Leesville High School) nor Lees McRae’s Amada Dotson gave up a hit in the first three innings. The Bobcats got on the board in the fourth with a solo home run from Anna Carter. The Fleet would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Jocelyn Smith (Greer, SC, Riverside HS) doubled and scored on a single by Hailey Whitlock (Liberty, SC). In the bottom of the sixth, Kayla Vinson (Berea, SC, Berea High School) led off with a walk, stole second base, and scored on a double by Lindsey LaPrad (Summerville, SC, Fort Dorchester HS) to give the Fleet a 2-1 lead and Gunter would retire the Bobcats in order in the seventh to close the game out.
LaPrad finished the game 1-3 with a double and run batted in, while Whitlock was 1-2 with a RBI to lead the Fleet at the plate. Gunter picked up the win allowing just one run on two hits and striking out five in seven innings.
Carter led Lees McRae going 1-3 with a home run and RBI, while Nicole Baxter was 1-3 with a double. Dotson took the loss allowing two run on four hits and striking out seven in six innings of work.
Erskine would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two and would not look back as they cruised to the 9-1 victory.
The Fleet was led at the plate by Kelly Davis (Weaverville, NC, North Buncombe High) who was 2-4 with a double, home run, and two RBIs, while Katee Knapp (Branford, FL, Branford High School) was 2-4 with a double and two runs driven in. Leigh Anne Shelley (Fork, SC, Lake View) picked up the win allowing just one run on two hits in five innings of work.
Lees McRae was led at the plate by Megan Knowles who was 1-3 with a double and RBI, while Paula Fryar added a double and Megan West added a single. West took the loss allowing nine runs on 13 hits in five plus innings of work.
