#10 Erskine Knocks off Lander 8-7 to Sweep Season Series

GREENWOOD – The Erskine College baseball team used Matt Schneider (Greenville, SC, Greenville High School)’s RBI bunt single in the eighth inning to give the Flying Fleet an 8-7 non-conference victory over Lander Tuesday evening at Legion Field.

Erskine improves to 24-7 overall, while Lander moves to 19-10.

The Flying Fleet’s Bryan Fogle (Lexington, SC, Lexington High School) hit a one out double in the top of the eighth, then advanced to third on Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School)’s pop fly to center field, setting up the game-winning run.

Russell Reid (Hudson, NC, South Caldwell HS) (4-1) was awarded the win as he struck out two and allowed just one earned run on three hits in three innings pitched. Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) earned his fifth save of the season.

Lander’s Andy Quick (2-1) took the loss as he struck out one and allowed one earned run on two hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

Erskine took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, SC, Woodruff HS) scored an unearned run on Fogle’s RBI single.

Lander came back in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-1 when Brian Bender scored on Josh Lovvorn’s RBI single, Devin Ridlehoover scored on Robert Skinner’s sacrifice fly and Lovvorn crossed the plate on Jordan Owens’ groundout.

The Bearcats extended the lead to 4-1 in the second when Nate Mangiapane scored on a passed ball, and 5-1 in the third when Gabe McCann scored on Bud Lanier’s sacrifice fly.

The Fleet trimmed the margin to 5-4 in the fourth on Cody McElhaney (Beech Island, SC, Midland Valley HS)’s sacrifice fly, Keith Hill (Abbeville, SC, Abbeville High School)’s RBI double and Fogle’s RBI single, then regained the lead at 7-5 in the fifth on Garrett’s three-run triple to right center field.

The Bearcats closed the gap to 7-6 in the sixth when Lanier reach first when he was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a passed ball.

For Lander, Bender went 2-for-3 with one double and one run scored, and Skinner went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Lovvorn went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

Lander tied the game at 7-7 when crossed the plate on Owens’ groundout.

For Erskine, Garrett went 1-for-5 with one triple, one run scored and three RBI; Fogle went 4-for-5 with two doubles, one run and two RBI; and Hill went 1-for-5 win one double, one run, one RBI.
