GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team won its second straight game Friday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Erskine College, 6-4, in a non-conference game at Doug Spears Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled because of the low temperatures.
The Bearcats improves to 12-16 overall, While Erskine drops to 14-12.
Erskine took the early 1-0 lead in the third on Kayla Vinson's RBI double.
Lander exploded for five runs in its half of the third. With bases loaded, Carrie Hudson and Sara Senn scored on a pair of Erskine errors, then Shelly Grimsley stroked a two-run double, followed by Aubrie Phillips' RBI single.
Erskine trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the fourth on another Vinson RBI double and made it 5-4 in the fifth when Courtney Davis scored on Melinda Bowman's groundout.
Lander scored its final run in the sixth on Natalie Smith's RBI single.
The Bearcats' Hayley Leissner (8-12) earned the win as she struck out 11, walked two and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in seven complete innings.
For Lander, Hudson went 2-for-4 with one double, while Senn and Phillips both went 2-for-3.
Erskine's Lauren Gunter (7-5) took the loss as she struck out three, walked one and allowed one earned run on seven hits in three innings pitched.
Erskine's Vinson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, while Kelly Davis went 2-for-4 with one double, Rebekah George went 2-for-4, and Courtney Davis 2-for-3.
