Due West, SC---The23rd ranked Flying Fleet started out the 2009 season with a double header sweep of Paine College Tuesday afternoon winning game one 6-3 and game two 13-1.
The Lions would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Erskine would answer back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, and two RBI doubles from Bryan Fogle and John Bolding. Paine would cut the lead to 4-2 the following inning but the Fleet answered again with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Lions would rally to make it a 6-3 game in the sixth inning and have the bases loaded and two outs, but Altee Pearson would come in out of the bullpen and get the Fleet out of the jam and go one to record his first save of the season. Fogle led the Fleet at the plate going 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Bolding finished 1-2 with a double and two RBIs as well. Senior Michael Moore picked up the win allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work and striking out 11. With the win, Moore breaks the school record for career victories with his 25th. Also senior Matt Schneider picked up two walks in game one to break the school record for career walks.
The Fleet came out swinging in game two pounding out 15 hits and scoring 13 runs to cruise to the victory. Erskine was led at the plate by senior Keith Hill who was 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while freshman Zach McCarthy was 2-2 with a double and triple. Freshman Cody McElhaney and Fogle both finished the game 2-3 with a double and two RBIs. Russell Reid picked up the victory allowing just one run in five innings of work and striking out three.
With the win, Erskine improves to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Milledgeville, GA Thursday to play Georgia College and State at 2:00 pm.
