Fleet Softball Sweeps Montreat

Due West, SC---The Erskine College softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 victory over Montreat College in game one of a double header. The Fleet then took game two 6-0 in a game that was called after five innings due to darkness.

In game one, Montreat took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI ground out by Amber Summerow, the Cavaliers added another run in the third on a RBI single from Erin Cross to make it a 2-0 game. The Fleet would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Katee Knapp blasted her tenth home run over the right field fence to make it a 2-1 game. Montreat pushed it back to a two run game the following inning with a RBI single from Olivia Huffman. Erskine would tie the game up at three on RBI singles from Kelly Davis and Rebekah George and send the game into extra innings. Montreat scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 7-3 lead and force the Fleet into rally mode again. With a runners on first and second with no one out, Lindsey LaPrad hit her first home run of the season over the center field wall to make it a 7-6 game. After a pitching change, the Fleet would load the bases up, bringing Melinda Bowman to the plate. Bowman would single into left center field scoring the tying and winning runs for the Fleet.

Knapp led the Fleet at the plate going 2-3 with a double, home run and run batted in, while Bowman was 2-4 and drove in the winning runs. Davis finished the game 1-3 with a double and RBI, while George was 1-3 with an RBI. Lauren Gunter picked up the win allowing three earned runs in eight innings of work and struck out seven batters.

Erskine picked up where they left off in game one, scoring four runs in the first inning and two in the second and took a 6-0 victory. The Fleet were led at the plate by George who was 1-2 with a double and two runs batted in. Knapp was 2-3 with two RBIs, while Kayla Vinson finished 2-2 with a run scored. George picked up the win allowing just one hit in five innings of work and striking out six batters

With the win, Erskine improves to 10-7 on the season. The Fleet return to action Thursday afternoon as they host Oakland University.
