MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill swept a doubleheader from Erskine Friday afternoon at Ponder Park. The Lions won the first game 2-1 and the second game 11-4. The Lions improve to 4-6. The Flying Fleet drop to 7-6.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between the two teams. The combination of Tiffany Farthing (Kure Beach, N.C.), Paige Brantley (Raleigh, N.C) and Tara West (Urbana, Ohio), who picked up the win, surrendered only one run on three hits to the Flying Fleet. Lauren Gunter (Batesburg, S.C.) pitched five innings and allowed no runs on two hits while striking out six batters. Leigh Shelley (Fork, S.C.) pitched one inning of relief but lost the decision, giving up two runs on two hits.
Mars Hill was finally able to break through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) singled to left center field and later scored on an Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, N.C.) two-run homer. The homerun was Seawell's first of the season.
Erskine tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning. Katee Knapp (Branford, Fla.) singled to third base, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored when Lindsey LaPrad (Summerville, S.C.) singled down the left field line. However, both Amber Lynn Hartley (Batesburg, S.C.) and Hailey Whitlock (Liberty, S.C.) struck out swinging to end the threat.
Erskine wasted little time getting on the board in game two. Knapp hit a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Flying Fleet an early 2-0 lead.
Mars Hill responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, N.C.) scored on a Seawell ground out to get the Lions on the board. In the next at-bat, Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, S.C.) blasted a two-run homerun to give Mars Hill a 3-2 lead. The homerun was Harber's second of the season.
Mars Hill scored one run in each of the second and third innings to increase its advantage to 5-2. Seawell singled to center field, scoring Huff. Jenny Hoyt (Rose Park, Kan.) singled to left center field, plating Anna James (Bellevue, Wash.).
Erskine came back with one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Kelly Davis (Weaverville, N.C.) scored on a Knapp ground out to cut the deficit to 5-3 in favor of the Lions. Jocelyn Smith (Greer, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring LaPrad, to make the score 5-4.
The Lions again answered the Flying Fleet threat in the bottom of the fifth inning. Seawell singled down the left field line, plating Lindsey Barrier (Salisbury, N.C.). Later in the inning and with the bases loaded, Harber muscled a grand slam over the left field fence to give Mars Hill a commanding 10-4 lead. The homerun was Harber's second of the game and third of the season. The Lions concluded their scoring when pinch hitter Jade Bullins (Danbury, N.C.) singled up the middle, scoring pinch runner Jessie Taylor (Huntersville, N.C.).
Brantley picked up the victory in game two, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief. Rebekah George (Mauldin, S.C.) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work.
