Belmont, NC---The 20th ranked Erskine baseball team split a Conference Carolinas double header with Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon. With the split, the Fleet won their opening conference series two games to one.
The Fleet took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Keith Hill and a sacrifice fly from Chas Anthony that scored Hill. The Crusaders would tie the game up with a run in the second and a run in the third, but Erskine would respond with two runs in the fourth to make it a 4-2 lead. The Fleet added another run in the fifth on a solo home run from Cody McElhaney. Belmont would then score five runs in the next two innings to take a 7-5 lead and hold Erskine scoreless the final two innings to take the win.
Hill led the Fleet offense going 3-4 with a double and RBI, while John Bolding was 3-4 with a triple and run driven in. Russell Reid took the loss allowing four runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Crusaders looked to take the momentum for their game one win into game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. The Fleet would take the lead in the third on a two run single from Brandon Garrett and a two run home run from Bryan Fogle. The Fleet would add a two more runs to take a 6-3 lead, and would hold off a late Belmont Abbey rally to take the 6-5 victory.
The Fleet were led in game two by Fogle who was 3-3 with two home runs and three runs driven in, while Zach McCarthy was 2-2 with a double. Huitt Scarborough picked up the win, allowing three runs in 3.1 innings of relief and striking out five. Atlee Pearson picked up his second save of the season allowing no hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work.
With the win, Erskine improves to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
