Erskine Falls to Anderson

Due West, SC – Too many errors cost the Flying Fleet tonight an opportunity to improve in the conference standings as the Fleet fall to Anderson 3 sets to 1.  The first set felt like two heavyweight champs exchanging swings at each other as both teams swapped hard spikes.  Erskine’s Liz Massey (Greenville, SC/Eastside H.S.) led the Fleet attack with 6 kills, including 3 of Erskine’s first 4 points.  Responding to the Fleet was Anderson’s outside hitter Jamie Lancaster with 4 kills in the first set.  Midway through the set, the Fleet managed a four point run behind a kill and block by junior Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN/Iowa Lakes CC) to extend their lead to 18 to 14.  Erskine would go on to win the set 25 to 19.

The slugfest continued through the 2nd set.  Anderson quickly jumped to a 5 to 0 lead behind kills by Jamie Lancaster and Adria Mullaney and three Erskine errors.  Erskine would regroup following a timeout to close to within four with the score 11 to 7.  At this point Erskine rallied with a kill by Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Wando H.S.) and a block by Albers and Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA/Hart Co. H.S.). to close within two.  Erskine’s Liz Massey would serve an ace to tie the set at 17 a piece. Anderson countered with two quick points behind a powerful spike by Jamie Lancaster and a nice tip for a kill by Paulette Rivers.  Julie Jackson (Simpsonville, SC/Southside Christian School) served a nice ace to keep pace but Anderson closed out the set 25 to 23.

The next two sets belonged to Anderson as Erskine committed 19 errors and had difficulty getting into any type of offensive flow.  Liz Massey led the Fleet with 9 kills.  Meanwhile, Anderson’s attack continued to perform well, led by Jamie Lancaster with 20 kills and 15 digs on the evening.

With the loss, Erskine drops to 12-17, 9-7 in conference.  The Fleet play their last two regular season games this weekend as they face Belmont-Abbey Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by Lees-McRae on Saturday.  Saturday’s game time is now set for 1 p.m. instead of previously advertised time of 2 p.m.
