ANDERSON, S.C. -- The No. 14 ranked Erskine College Flying Fleet used back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to comeback and beat the Anderson University Trojans Wednesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Erskine trailed 5-4 going in the fifth when Matt Schneider hit a three run blast down the right field line. John Bolding followed with a solo shot over the left field fence to give Erskine a 9-4.
Erskine got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Keith Hill singled and stole second to start of the game. Erskine then got to sacrifice fly outs by Greg Huff and Brain Fogle to score Hill and give Erskine a 1-0 lead.
Anderson answered when Blair Carson launched a three run home run to left field that scored Derek Hipp and Alex Roberson to make it 3-1.
Anderson notched another run in the second on an RBI single by Hipp that scored Ed Johnson. The Trojans scored one more run in the third when Carson hit a led off double and scored on a Johnson infield single to make it 5-1.
Erskine offense woke up in the fourth inning when Schneider hit a RBI triple and scored on a Bolding single to right. After a Trojan error, Bolding scored when Matt Wurzer hit a sacrifice fly to right to cut the lead to 5-4.
Erskine scored five in the fifth highlighted by the Schneider and Bolding home runs to take a 9-5 lead over Anderson.
Anderson scratched across one run in the sixth when Matt Hill single to left that scored Hipp to close the lead to 9-6.
Erskine responded in the seventh with one run on an Atlee Pearson RBI single, but Trojans answered in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double by Don Ballard to keep it a three run game -- 10-7.
Anderson mounted a comeback in the ninth when Carson singled, but with the tying run at first the Trojan comeback feel short.
Huitt Scarborough earned the win for Erskine by working 5 1/3 innings allowing only three runs. Atlee Pearson earned the save for Erskine, and Brady Peele took the loss for the Trojans.
Anderson was led offensively by Carson, who was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Carson was triple shy of the cycle. Hipp had three singles in four at bats.
Schneider led the Flying Fleet with four hits in four plate appearances including a three-run home run. Schneider was a double shy of the cycle. Bolding went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored to contribute to the attack.
With the loss, Anderson falls to 16-33 overall, while Erskine improve to 34-5 overall.
