GREENWOOD – Bryan Fogle hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, leading No. 15 ranked Erskine College to a 12-5 non-conference baseball victory over the Lander Bearcats Tuesday night at Legion Field.
Matt Schneider and Tyler Layton also homered for the Flying Fleet, who improved to 41-8. Lander fell to 18-30.
William Buzhardt (8-1) was the winning pitcher for Erskine while the second of nine Bearcats hurlers, Tim Rau (3-6), took the loss. Buzhardt pitched 7-1/3 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking four.
Lander took a 3-0 lead in the first on TJ Guinan’s RBI single to short right center and AJ Nunziato’s two-run double off the fence in right center. The rally started with two out and nobody on when Brooks Arnette singled and Josh Lovvorn walked.
The Fleet scored its first run in the second when Greg Huff doubled, moved to third on Schneider’s groundout and scored on John Bolding’s ground out. Layton followed with a solo home run over the fence in left center, pulling Erskine within 3-2. It was Layton’s second homer of the season.
The Fleet scored three runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead. Brandon Garrett singled, Chas Anthony doubled and Fogle hit a two-run single. Fogle moved to third on Huff’s single and scored on Schneider’s ground out.
Erskine blew the game open in the sixth with seven runs on two walks, Keith Hill’s RBI single, another walk, Fogle’s grand slam, another walk, and Schneider’s two-run homer. Fogle’s 10th homer of the season hit the light pole next to the scoreboard while Schneider’s 11th homer of the year was also to right field, making it 12-3.
Lander scored twice in the eighth when Lovvorn hit a leadoff single to left, moved to third when Guinan reached on a two-base error by the left-fielder, and scored on Nunziato’s ground out. Guinan came home on Hunter Ruoss’s RBI single to left.
Leading hitters for the Fleet included Fogle, 3-for-5, two runs scored and six RBI; Schneider, 2-for-5, a homer, three RBI; Hill, 2-for-5 with an RBI; Huff, 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored; and Layton, 1-for-3 with a homer, two walks, and two runs scored.
Nunziato led the Bearcats, going 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, and three RBI. Lovvorn was 3-for-3 with two walks and a pair of runs scored while Arnette went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Guinan was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
