#14 Fleet Lose to Belmont Abbey in Tournament

WILSON, N.C.--No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey College (34-17) defeated No. 2 seed Erskine College (39-7), 4-0, in a winner’s bracket game of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament on Friday morning at Historic Fleming Stadium.

The Crusaders next battle No. 1 seed Mount Olive College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Flying Fleet next face No. 9 seed Coker College in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m. Friday. Erskine junior starter Mike Moore (Lexington, S.C.) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning but the Abbey finally broke through scoring its first run on its first hit. After a walk and a hit batsman, junior Tyler McKenzie (Winston-Salem, N.C.) drilled a single in the right-center gap to score the first run of the game. The Crusaders added three unearned runs in the seventh with an RBI-double by senior Will Breslin (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and a two-run single by classmate Seth Waller (Salisbury, N.C.). Freshman starter Tyler Powell (Port Orange, Fla.) tossed eight scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season. Powell (5-4) scattered five hits while junior Andrew Morton (Lexington, N.C.) pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout bid by the Crusaders. Waller had two of Belmont Abbey’s five hits while sophomore Greg Huff (McDonough, Ga.) and freshman Brandon Garrett (Woodruff, S.C.) each belted two hits for the Fleet. Moore (9-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season allowing one run on one hit, five walks, and three hit-by-pitches.
