Due West, SC---11th ranked Erskine College and Belmont Abbey split a Conference Carolinas double header Monday afternoon. Erskine won game one 1-0 and Belmont Abbey took game two 3-2.
Erskine took advantage of an error in the bottom of the first that allowed Greg Huff to reach base and he would later scored on a wild pitch for the lone run either team would score.
Erskine was led at the plate by Matt Schneider who was 2-3 with a double, while Huff was 1-3 with a run scored and John Bolding also added a hit. Mike Moore picked up his seventh win of the season pitching a complete game shut out striking out 10 batters in seven innings.
For Belmont Abbey, Patrick Atwell, Jay McConnell, and Carlos Vasquez each had a hit, while Michael Raymond was the tough luck losing pitcher, allowing just one unearned run in six innings and striking out four.
The Crusaders took the lead in game two in the third inning on a solo home run from Elio Rey. Belmont Abbey held the lead until the fifth inning when the Fleet tied the game when Bolding scored on a ground out by Tyler Layton. The Fleet would take a 2-1 lead going into the final inning on a solo home run from Huff. The Crusaders scored two runs in the seventh capped off by an RBI single from Alex Castallanos to take a 3-2 lead. The Fleet would get runners at first and third but were unable to tie the game up and Belmont Abbey to the victory.
The Crusaders were led Rey who was 3-3 with a home run and RBI, while Vasquez and Castallanos also added a hit each. Tyler Powell picked up the win allowing two runs in six innings and striking out six.
Huff led the Fleet going 2-4 with a home run and RBI, while Ross Hanna was 2-3 and Schneider added a triple. Atlee Pearson took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work.
Erskine is now 24-2 overall and 10-2 in the conference, while Belmont Abbey is 22-9 and 11-4.
