Due West, SC---The Erskine College baseball team opened up the 2008 season with a double header sweep of Paine College Monday afternoon at Grier Field.
In game one, the Fleet jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Keith Hill scored on a sacrifice fly from Chas Anthony. Erskine would add a run in the third and a run in the fourth to push their lead to 3-0 going into the sixth inning. Paine would cut the lead to one in the sixth, and then in the seventh would have the tying run at third and the go ahead run at second with one out. Erskine brought in Huitt Scarborough, who threw one pitch to get a fly ball to center field and Hill would throw a one hop strike to the plate to nail the runner and end the game.
Hill also led the Fleet at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored, while Bryan Fogle was 1-2 with two RBIs. Freshman Ross Hanna also added to hits for Erskine in the win. Sophomore Andrew Guest picked up the win allowing two runs in 6.1 innings of work allowing two runs and striking out three. Scarborough picked up his first career save, pitching the final two thirds of the seventh inning.
Erskine’s offense exploded in game two scoring runs in each inning on the way to a 12-1 victory. Freshman John Bolding led the attack going a perfect 3-3 with a double and two runs scored. Greg Huff and Matt Schneider were both 2-3 with a home run and drove in two and four runs respectively. Fogle finished the game 2-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Shawn Glover also added a home run for the Fleet. Michael Moore picked up the win on the mound, allowing one unearned run in five innings of work and striking out four.
Erskine improves to 2-0 on the season and will host Augusta State tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.
