Erskine Softball Loses Season Opener to Lincoln Memorial

Due West, SC---The Erskine College softball team lost 5-4 and 4-2 to Lincoln Memorial to open up the 2008 season Saturday afternoon.



Lincoln Memorial jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in game one, but the Fleet would battle back to get to within one run, but would not be able to get over the hump and lost 5-4. Kelly Davis led Erskine at the plate, going 2-3 with a stolen base, while Katie Knapp hit her first home run of the season and drove in one run. Lauren Gunter took the loss, allowing four earned runs in four innings of work and striking out five. The Lady Railsplitters were led on offense by Amanda Wampler and Alisa Burk who were 2-3 with two doubles each, while Devin Sponseller homered. Jessica Locker picked up the win, allowing four runs in seven innings and striking out seven.

In game two, the Lady Railsplitters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Fleet would answer back in the bottom of the inning, capped off by a RBI single from Courtney Davis. Lincoln Memorial would take the lead back for good in the fourth, taking advantage of an Erskine error to go up 3-2. They would add an insurance run in the seventh when Wampler hit a solo home run. Davis and Rebekah George led the Erskine offense with two hits each. Kaitlin Hunt took the loss, allowing three earned runs in seven innings and striking out two, while Wampler picked up the win allowing two runs in a complete game performance.

Erskine is now 0-2 on the season, while Lincoln Memorial improves to 2-0.
