Derek Schmitt

Head Coach Derek Schmitt will be leading the Flying Fleet's second season after directing them to a fourth place finish in Conference Carolinas in their arugural season of 2013.  Three players earned first team all-conference along with Freshman of Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Originally from Massachusetts, Coach Schmitt has 17 years of coaching experience.  Before joining Erskine in 2011, Schmitt was the Women's Volleyball Assistant Coach at Clemson University.   Prior to that, Coach Schmitt had been the head coach at Southern Wesleyan University for five years as well as the Assistant Director of Athletics for three years.  Coach Schmitt had a team qualify for the NCCAA National Tournament in 2008 and had several teams earn NAIA All-Scholar Team honors.

As a player, Coach Schmitt was a four year starter at middle hitter for the Eastern Nazarene men’s volleyball club team and was a 3-time All-Star in the New England Collegiate Volleyball League.   In 1993, Coach Schmitt played on the team that finished third at the National Men’s Club Volleyball Championships in Buffalo, New York.  Coach Schmitt earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Youth Ministry from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1995. 

He and his wife, Monique, reside in Clemson, South Carolina, with their eight year old daughter, Annika.
