HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Shorter 5-4 Erskine (Final / 7 innings)
Heading into a pivotal doubleheader with postseason implications hanging in the balance on the final day of the regular season, Erskine could not have asked for a better start, as
Jude Littrell and
Dylan Wanat each had RBI doubles in the first inning, helping the Fleet jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
Quinn Allen added a run-scoring single in the fourth and starting pitcher
Blake Holshouser cruised through four scoreless innings on the mound to begin his outing. However, the visitors struck for a pair of runs in the fifth inning and added a three-spot in the sixth to go in front, stunning the Fleet late in the first game of the day.
Game 2: Shorter 8-6 Erskine (Final / 10 innings)
The back half of the doubleheader saw a back-and-forth, highly competitive contest from start to finish. After the Hawks scored in the top of the first, Erskine responded thanks to an RBI double from
Jude Littrell to tie the game. In the second inning,
Dylan Wanat crushed a go-ahead two-run home run and
Matt Layton added a bases-loaded walk, putting the Fleet in front, 4-1. Shorter answered in the next few innings and tied the game at four after four innings. The Hawks tallied another run in the sixth to go in front, but an RBI single from
Jacob Platt in the bottom half tied the game at 5. Moments later,
Noah Hill delivered a run-scoring single of his own, putting the Fleet back in front, 6-5, as Erskine used a two-out rally to regain its lead. Shorter scored in the seventh to tie the game once more and the score held at six apiece through the next two frames, sending things to extra innings for the second time in as many days between Erskine and Shorter. However, this time the Hawks won the 10th inning, as the Fleet lost a heartbreaker in the season finale.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Following Saturday's action, Erskine did not qualify for next week's 2025 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championships, meaning their 2025 season came to an end this weekend. The Fleet will turn their focus toward the off-season and begin preparations for the 2026 season.
