HOW IT HAPPENED
After sweeping a doubleheader at home yesterday to open the series, Erskine and Emmanuel were forced to move to Georgia to wrap up the series due to constant rainfall in the Due West area. The Lions, back at home, made a quick start, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. The Fleet cut into the early deficit with a pair of bases loaded walks drawn by
Matt Layton and
Jorge Pascual, but Erskine was forced to settle for just the two runs, trailing 3-2 after one chaotic inning. That chaos ensued in the next few frames as well, but it led to Emmanuel breaking the game wide open, leading 14-2 after three innings.
Jorge Pascual doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth and then Erskine made a sizeable dent in the deficit in the sixth. A wild pitch allowed Josean Sanchez to score the first run of the inning, and then
Jacob Platt and
Elliot Sanders each had RBI singles. Pascual and Layton each had sacrifice flies and
Kort McLean's run-scoring triple got the Fleet back to within five runs, 14-9. But, Emmanuel scored a run in the seventh and two more in the ninth to regain its cushion as Erskine was unable to overcome a slow start mired by defensive miscues in the defensive finale.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine has four home games next week, starting with a mid-week battle against Georgia College (5-5) on Tuesday at 2 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2017 season.
