Erskine Football | Fleet come up short in valiant effort against Division-I opponent, Presbyterian

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Erskine College football team (1-1) was defeated by Presbyterian College (1-1) by a score of 31-14 at J.W. Babb Stadium on Saturday night. The Fleet and Blue Hose renewed a rivalry that dates back to the early 1900s in Erskine's first matchup against a Division-I school since the Fleet restarted their program in 2020.

  • Rashad Luckey was the game's leading rusher, totaling 58 yards on 19 carries, as both teams struggled to find consistency on the ground.
  • Rodshaun Dorsey posted a game-high 69 receiving yards on 7 catches, including a pair of touchdowns.
  • Joshua Thomas led the Fleet defense with 9 tackles and an interception, while Andrew Melton forced a fumble.
SCORING SUMMARY
1st Quarter:
  • With the Erskine defense having forced a 3rd and 7 on PC's first drive of the game, Zach Switzer caught a screen pass in the backfield and ran it 67 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring. Andrew Melton forced a fumble in the redzone later in the quarter to keep it a 7-0 game after the first 15 minutes.
2nd Quarter:
  • Presbyterian doubled its lead with a 9 yard pitch and catch just 92 seconds into the second quarter. Erskine was forced to punt on its ensuing drive, but Joshua Kamoto and Miller Shouse combined for a huge tackle on 4th down to stall the Blue Hose's next possession.
  • Erskine used that momentum to march down the field on a 12-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 12-yard touchdown from Pender to Dorsey to get the Fleet back within a score.
  • However, Switzer returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and PC had almost immediately regained its two-score lead.
3rd Quarter:
  • Joshua Thomas picked off the Presbyterian QB on the first drive of the second half, but the Fleet offense was held in check. About halfway through the quarter, the Blue Hose found the endzone again, extending their lead to 28-7.
4th Quarter
  • Erskine answered with another long drive that ended with Pender and Dorsey connecting for a Fleet touchdown, making it 28-14. However, PC responded with a field goal on its next possession, and an interception by the Blue Hose defense a few minutes later ended any comeback attempt for the Fleet, who more than held their own against a Division-I opponent on Saturday night.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet continue a long homestand to open the 2024 season with a battle against Elizabeth City State University (1-1, 0-0 CIAA) next Saturday at 1 p.m.
