HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: North Greenville 6-3 Erskine
In its first games in exactly a week, Erskine took on the division leaders, North Greenville, but came out and threw an early punch, thanks to a two-run double from
Maddie Ingram in the top of the first. The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom half, but the Fleet regained their two-run advantage on a
Kyndall Chandler bases-loaded walk to go in front, 3-1. However, NGU responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the second to take the lead, and the Fleet bats were held in check after a hot start, dropping the opening game of the day.
Game 2: North Greenville 15-7 Erskine (Final / 6 innings)
The back half of the doubleheader quickly turned into an entertaining, offensive shootout, started by more first-inning fireworks from the Fleet. This time it was
Gabby Burroughs who provided the two-run double in the opening frame to give Erskine an early lead. After North Greenville took its first lead of the game in the second inning,
Kyndall Chandler opened the next half-inning with a leadoff walk and came around to score to tie the game. Moments later,
Brooke Patterson launched her sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast to fire the Fleet back in front, 5-3. The Crusaders again scored the next three runs of the game to go back on top, but again the Erskine offense had an answer. In the fifth inning, as a leadoff walk worked by Burroughs eventually led to a sacrifice fly by
Summer Nelsen to tie the game once more. A few batters later,
Addy Crawford crossed home on a wild pitch and the Fleet had regained the lead, 7-6. However, NGU scored twice in the bottom half and pulled away late, as the Fleet were unable to keep up in Game 2.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine visits another Southwest Division foe, Emmanuel University (18-19, 7-7 CC), on Saturday, for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
