HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: North Greenville 4-3 Erskine (Final / 8 innings)
North Greenville opened the scoring in the second inning, but the Fleet responded with a two-out double from
David Hernandez in the fourth that was followed by a wild pitch and a Crusaders' error to score Hernandez and tie the game. That second-inning run was the only blemish on the stat line for starting pitcher
Joe Alegre, who pitched into the sixth inning. After a leadoff double from NGU in the sixth,
Caleb Dix came on to relieve Alegre and stranded the would-be go-ahead run. Dix worked around a one-out walk in the seventh as the second game of the series headed to extra innings. However, North Greenville hit a pair of home runs in the top of the eighth to take a 4-1 lead. But, Erskine refused to go quietly in their half of the extra inning.
Jude Littrell led off with an opposite-field double, and a few batters later, Josean Sanchez drew a walk. Both scored moments later on two-run single from
Jorge Pascual to get the Fleet within a run and bringing the winning run to the plate. But, Erskine's comeback efforts fell just short as they were beaten in extra innings to begin the day.
Game 2: North Greenville 12-7 Erskine
Hoping to salvage the series finale,
Christian Rivera's first-inning RBI single gave the Fleet their first lead of the weekend. But, NGU struck back in the third with a pair of home runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Fleet got half of the two-run deficit back in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI double from
Adrian Rolon, but the Crusaders scored six times in the fifth to open up a 9-2 lead. Erskine slowly crawled their way back within striking distance on a two-run single from
Tyler Smith in the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back big flies from Josean Sanchez and
Jorge Pascual in the sixth, and another home run from Pascual in eighth to get the Fleet within three, 10-7, heading into the final inning. But, the Crusaders homered twice in the ninth to put the game beyond doubt as the Fleet were beaten in the series finale.
