HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second consecutive time to open the season, Erskine's weekend tilt began on a Thursday as the Fleet visited unbeaten Lynn to kick off a three-game weekend in Florida. Starting pitching dominated the game early as Fleet starter
Joe Alegre racked up scoreless inings in the opening frames, allowing just one baserunner through his first four innings of work. In the fifth, the Erskine offense came to life on back-to-back two-out doubles from Josean Sanchez and
Daniel Hernandez to open the scoring. Moments later,
Christian Rivera singled home Hernandez to give the Fleet a 2-0 lead at the halfway point. Alegre ran into his first bit of trouble in the bottom half, but induced a pair of flyouts to escape the jam unscathed. The junior right-hander continued to dominate the Knights all afternoon long and a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Tyler Smith in the eighth extended the Fleet's lead. However, Lynn got on the board in their half of the eighth and scored three times in the ninth to escape with a win in their final at-bat.
THE PLAYER
Despite the loss, starting pitcher
Joe Alegre tossed a gem to begin the weekend. The junior pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and totaling nine strikeouts without issuing any free passes.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine moves on to its next Sunshine State opponent, as the Fleet travel down to Fort Lauderdale to visit Nova Southeastern University (3-1) on Friday at 5 p.m. The Fleet knocked off a then nationally-ranked Sharks team in convincing fashion, 14-5, a season ago.
