Erskine Women's Volleyball | Fleet begin weekend at Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Erskine College women's volleyball team (0-6) began play this weekend with a pair of matches at the Lions' Den Invitational, hosted by Emmanuel University, on Friday. The Fleet were defeated by Eckerd University (4-0) in straight sets in the afternoon and then swept against Shorter University (2-3) in the nightcap.

MATCH 1 STATS vs Eckerd (0-3 FINAL, 14-25, 10-25, 9-25)
KILLS: Ali Angell (4), Ryleigh Taylor (4)
ACES: 3 players with 1
ASSISTS: Lena Mykins (12)
DIGS: Astyn Casey (12)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Following a slow start to begin the weekend in the early stages of Set 1, Erskine got back within 3 with a mini 3-0 scoring run, including an ace from Ryleigh Taylor to make it 9-6. But, Eckerd responded by winning the next 10 points to secure the opening set. Set 2 was eerily similar for the Fleet, except this time it was three early kills from Taylor to make it a 9-6 deficit before Eckerd went on another scoring run to run away with Set 2. The third set was all Eckerd from start to finish, with Ali Angell and Meghan DeWalt tallying kills in the final frame.

THE TEAM
Erskine hit -.082 (14 K / 21 E / 85 TA) for the match.

MATCH 2 STATS vs Shorter (0-3 FINAL, 13-25, 22-25, 10-25)
KILLS: Ryleigh Taylor (6), Rebecca Yohe (6)
ACES: 4 players with 1
BLOCKS: Kimmy Stiltner (3)
ASSISTS: Lena Mykins (13)
DIGS: Astyn Casey (8)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the nightcap, Erskine took on its second Gulf South foe of the young season, and a Rebecca Yohe ace tied the opening set at 3 and helped keep the Fleet around in the early stages. After a brief Shorter run, Yohe tallied a pair of kills in quick succession to get the Fleet within 5, but Erskine was unable to get closer as they dropped the opening set. A Ryleigh Taylor kill got the Fleet on the board in another competitive start to a set, but the Hawks opened up an eight-point lead. A pair of Ali Angell kills helped spur a Fleet comeback attempt, and even despite trailing 24-19, Erskine refused to go quietly as back-to-back kills from Taylor followed by a Kaylee Gunter ace got Erskine back within two. However, a Shorter kill moments later finished off a 25-22 score in Set 2. The Hawks won the first six points of Set 3 and never looked back as the Fleet were beaten in straight sets to round out their first day of action of the weekend.

THE TEAM
Erskine hit .079 (21 K / 15 E / 76 TA) for the match.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine wraps up play in the Lions' Den Invitational with two more matches tomorrow, but it will be two more tall tests for the Fleet. Erskine and Lee have a rematch at 12:30 p.m. after the Flames won in straight sets in Due West last weekend, and then the reigning SAC champions, Wingate, take on the Flying Fleet at 5:30 p.m.
